In a significant step towards enhancing oral health care across the nation, the Ministry of Health, in conjunction with the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHOAFRO), convened a pivotal stakeholder meeting. The objective was to craft a comprehensive national oral health strategic plan spanning the years 2024–2028. This initiative underscores a concerted effort to address oral health challenges and ensure equitable access to quality dental care for all citizens.

The stakeholder meeting brought together a diverse array of participants, including policymakers, oral health professionals, public health experts, community representatives, and other relevant stakeholders. This collaborative approach facilitated the exchange of ideas, expertise, and insights, fostering a holistic and inclusive strategy.

Key Focus Areas: The strategic plan encompasses various key focus areas aimed at promoting oral health and preventing dental diseases. These include:

  1. Preventive Measures: Emphasizing the importance of preventive interventions such as oral hygiene education, fluoride supplementation, and regular dental check-ups to mitigate the risk of dental caries and gum diseases.
  2. Access to Care: Enhancing access to affordable and quality dental services, particularly in underserved areas, through the establishment of dental clinics, mobile dental units, and outreach programs.
  3. Health Promotion: Launching targeted public awareness campaigns to promote oral health literacy, encourage healthy behaviors, and dispel misconceptions surrounding dental care.
  4. Capacity Building: Strengthening the capacity of oral health professionals through training programs, continuing education initiatives, and skill development workshops to enhance the delivery of dental services.
  5. Integration with Primary Healthcare: Integrating oral health services into primary healthcare systems to ensure a more comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery and improve overall health outcomes.

The development of the national oral health strategic plan marks just the beginning of a concerted effort to transform oral health care in the country. Moving forward, robust mechanisms for monitoring, evaluation, and adaptation will be put in place to track progress, identify challenges, and make necessary adjustments to ensure the effective implementation of the strategy.

The collaboration with WHOAFRO signifies a commitment to leveraging international expertise, resources, and best practices to strengthen the national oral health system. WHOAFRO’s technical support and guidance will play a crucial role in shaping and implementing evidence-based strategies tailored to the country’s specific context and needs.

The formulation of the national oral health strategic plan for the period of 2024–2028 marks a significant milestone in the journey towards achieving optimal oral health for all citizens. By prioritizing prevention, promoting access to care, and fostering collaboration, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with WHOAFRO and other stakeholders, is laying the groundwork for a healthier future where every individual can smile with confidence and enjoy good oral health.
