Date: January 21, 2024:
In a landmark exit meeting held on January 20, 2024, between the Strengthening and Utilisation of Response Group for Emergency (SURGE) Team deployed and the Liberian government, significant strides in healthcare intervention were celebrated. The meeting, attended by esteemed figures including Prof. Charles Senessie, Hon. Deputy Minister of Health 1, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, Prof. Foday Sahr, and the Liberian Minister of Health and Team, aimed to assess the impact of interventions deployed since January 6, 2024.
The Liberian government expressed profound satisfaction with the SURGE Team’s contribution, highlighting the remarkable achievement of zero mortality since the team’s arrival at JFK and Catholic hospitals. Observations indicated substantial improvements in patient care, with positive responses to treatment evident, including the successful discharge of one case and several others expected to follow suit.
Acknowledging the success of the medical team, the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Agency reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration. They graciously accepted the Liberian government’s request for the surge team to extend their stay for an additional week. This extension will facilitate continuous care provision and knowledge sharing, ensuring a seamless handover to incoming international personnel by mid-next week.
Key recommendations arising from the meeting emphasise the importance of cross-country exchange programmes, sub-regional coordination (Guinea Liberia and Sierra Leone), knowledge sharing initiatives, capacity-building efforts, and the integration of technology to fortify healthcare systems and emergency response capabilities. The commitment to these recommendations reflects a shared vision of building resilient and sustainable healthcare infrastructure that can withstand future challenges.
As the team prepares for an additional week of collaborative efforts, future steps include the completion of knowledge sharing processes, the continuation of care provision, and the implementation of cross-country initiatives. The team is expected back in Freetown on Friday, January 26, 2024.
In an era where global health challenges demand collective action, the SURGE Team’s impactful intervention in Liberia serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and shared expertise.
As the SURGE Team and the Liberian government join hands in this commendable endeavour, the world watches with hope, recognising that such collaborative efforts are essential for overcoming the complexities of our global health landscape.
