In a concerted effort to combat the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a national consultative workshop is set to take place at the Wusum Hotel in Makeni from February 20–23, 2024. This crucial event, organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and various other partners, aims to assess the impact of the previous National Action Plan (NAP) spanning 2018–2022. The primary goal is to chart a course for a more robust and effective response to AMR.

The workshop will bring together key stakeholders from diverse sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, and academia. This multidisciplinary approach is designed to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by AMR and to foster collaboration in developing effective strategies. By convening experts and decision-makers, the event seeks to create a platform for sharing best practices and innovative solutions in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

One of the focal points of the workshop will be a comprehensive assessment of the impact of the previous NAP (2018–2022). The evaluation will delve into the successes, challenges, and lessons learned during the implementation of the plan. This critical analysis will serve as the foundation for developing a more targeted and adaptive strategy in the ongoing battle against AMR.

Recognising the interconnected nature of AMR, the workshop will facilitate discussions among stakeholders from healthcare, agriculture, and academia. By promoting collaboration, the aim is to create synergies that will lead to more effective interventions. Representatives from various sectors will share their experiences and insights, contributing to a holistic understanding of the multifaceted challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance.

In addition to the assessment and collaborative discussions, the workshop will serve as a platform for the exchange of best practices and innovative strategies. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase successful initiatives implemented at the national level. This sharing of experiences will not only foster learning but also inspire the development of new, impactful approaches to address AMR.

The national consultative workshop at the Wusum Hotel in Makeni represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance. By bringing together key stakeholders, assessing the previous National Action Plan, and fostering collaboration, the event aims to chart a course for a stronger and more effective response to AMR. As the global community grapples with the complex challenges of antimicrobial resistance, such initiatives at the national level play a pivotal role in safeguarding public health and promoting sustainable practices in healthcare and agriculture.
